Studying abroad programs are categorized into three groups:
Students studying abroad through exchange programs with overseas schools:
Some Universities has exchange-program agreements with universities in many countries and areas around the world to promote academic and student/staff exchanges. Applications for exchange programs and the selection of exchange students vary according to the country where the student wishes to go. Some exchange programs accept only undergraduate school students while others accept only graduate school students. Therefore, students planning to apply for exchange programs are asked to confirm the conditions of the program they wish to apply for by referring to the pamphlet on application details issued twice a year by the Center for International Education.
Students attending overseas schools at their own expense:
Some students study at overseas schools at their own expense. As such, they are under neither University's overseas exchange programs nor scholarship systems. Every year, approximately 70 graduate school students attend overseas schools at their own expense.
Students attending overseas schools through scholarship programs:
Overseas study through scholarships provided by the government, foreign governments, or private-sector organizations is called scholarship overseas study.
Short-term overseas study programs
Participation in short-term overseas study programs is easier for many students, particularly those who are concerned about the length of overseas study, school expenses, and the lack of sufficient foreign-language ability. An increasing number of students are apparently taking part in short-term study programs, such as one-month programs, as a first step toward longer-term overseas study or as an opportunity to gain different cultural experiences.
