 Obtaining a Student Visa

The UK is very keen to attract bright young people to come and take advantage of the many types of high quality courses and opportunities to study in the UK. Student visas can be obtained from the offices of the British High Commission in Delhi and the British Deputy High Commissions in Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata. Students need to prove that they have an unconditional offer on a full time course, proof of accommodation, sufficient funds to cover the entire cost of studying and living in Britain and that they intend to return home on completion of their course. Student visas are normally granted for an initial period of one year, usually determined by the length of the course to be studied.

EEA Nationals

If you are a national of an EEA country (European Union plus Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway) you can enter the UK as a student with a minimum of formality i.e.:

  1. You do not require entry clearance or a visa

  2. You may be asked to show evidence that you have been accepted on to a course

  3. You have sufficient funds to support yourself whilst in the UK

  4. You will also need your passport

Non EEA Nationals

If you are not from the EEA (European Union, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway) you will have to meet certain immigration requirements.

Documents that are required for a student visa:-

  1. Completed visa application form (IM2A and IM2 S)

  2. Two passport size photographs

  3. Valid passport (in original)

  4. Visa Fee (non- refundable)

  5. Letter of unconditional acceptance from a UK institution for a full time course

  6. Proof of funding (Bank statement, Details of securities held, Chartered accountant's certification, Income Tax clearance, Letter from sponsor etc.)

  7. Attested copies of education certificates and English language test (IELTS) score sheet (if applicable)

  8. Proof of accommodation in the UK

Basic Rules:

You must be able to support and accommodate yourself and any dependents, and pay for your studies without working in the UK and without recourse to public funds. Your course of study should be full-time, i.e. you will devote at least 15 hours per week to organized study. You must intend to leave the UK when your studies are completed.
