University Profile
KarnatakUniversity is the second University in the state of Karnataka after the MysoreUniversity. Established initially at Mumbai in 1949, the location was shifted to Dharwad in October, 1949 and KarnatakUniversity had its official inauguration in March 1950. Covering a vast expanse of 750 acres on the hill named 'Chota Mahabaleshwar' one of seven hillocks on which Dharwad is beautifully perched inviting comparison with Rome; the University has its own ambience with a sylvan setting of undulating greenery. The rocky edifice built in magnificent style is a tribute to his genius as the architect with a matching academic input the faculty, to earn the campus the name, Pavate Nagar for posterity.
The University today is rated as one of the Universities in the Country with a potential for Excellence, as identified by NAAC by giving a five star status which only a handful of Universities have been able to achieve. The second oldest in the state, Karnatak University with 48 P.G. Departments, 5 P.G. Centers, 5 Constituent College : 256 Affiliating Colleges with 264 P.G. teachers, 4252 UG teachers, 4531 PG students and 1,01,142 UG students in a community of academics, all drawn in the adventure of learning from the seven districts of Northern Karnataka. In the nearly 1000 km stretch between the erstwhile Bombay and Bangalore, Karnatak University, Dharwad with its tower and the clock with radium hands and figure, as time ticks by, radiate the light of learning beckoning alumni all around.

Library
The University Library was established along with the KarnatakUniversity. It started functioning from the year 1950. The Library was housed in the main building of the GovernmentTrainingCollege for men, where the University offices were working. The Chief of Mudhol donated about 2500 books to the University Library. During 1951, 10,000 back volumes of periodicals were purchased. The library has adopted an open access approach right from the beginning. The Library was shifted to its new building in the main educational building in the year 1959.
The main educational building "Vidya Soudha", was a complete wing to house the Library. The total carpet area of the Library was above 25,000 sqft,to accommodate one lakh volumes of books and periodicals with a capacity for 200 readers. Over the years, the Library outgrew these premises with the financial assistance from the U.G.C and State Govt, the Library acquired more books, and the back volumes of periodicals flooded the Library. The Library shifted to its new building in August 1981. The building has a carpet area of 41,500 sq ft and can accommodate over 4 lakhs of volumes and 250 readers at a time. There are 24 cubicals for research scholars.
