University Profile
University of Calcutta alias CalcuttaUniversity was founded by the British in India in the year 1857, modeled on the University of London in England. This was originally a purely affiliating university that offered no actual instruction but was the examining and degree granting authority for colleges spread all across northern India. Undergraduate teaching was carried out in the colleges as it is still.
Facilities Available-
The University is now being governed by the Calcutta University Act, 1979. The Act provides for the reconstitution of the University to enable it to function more effectively in the fields of teaching, training and research in various branches of learning and courses of study and for higher education to meet the growing needs of the Society. The C.U. Act, 1979 has ensured democratization of the various authorities of the University. It has given sufficient autonomy to the academic bodies of the University.
Departments
University of Calcutta has fifty five departments organized into eight faculties —
1. Agriculture;
2. Arts;
3. Commerce, Social Welfare & Business Management;
4. Education, Journalism and Library Science;
5. Engineering & Technology;
6. Fine Arts,
7. Music and Home Science;
8. Law and Science.
Museum
Asutosh Museum of Indian Art, the first public museum in any University in India, was established in 1937. Named after Sir Asutosh Mookerjee, the great educationist, who introduced the study of Indology including Indian art and archaeology at the University level, this Museum stands for preservation, presentation and study of objects of Indian art and antiquity particularly of eastern India. From a humble beginning with only 5 objects, the collections, thanks to the endeavours of Sri D.P. Ghosh, the first Curator and a number of benevolent donors and selfless workers, the museum has swelled to contain more than 25,000 items consisting of sculptures, paintings, folk-art objects, textiles, terracottas, etc. of extraordinary variety, providing a wide panorama of cultural endeavours of the people throughout the ages.
Library
The University Library, located in the CentenaryBuilding of the Asutosh Siksha Prangan, constitutes significant landmarks in the University of Calcutta's ceaseless quest for excellence. Hence a few words about the library may be found of some significance. The Central Library of the University at College Street Campus contains more than 577103 vols. including periodicals. The number is increasing every year. The University has also a very rich collection of manuscripts, in Bengali, Sanskrit, Tibetan, Persian, and Arabic.
The immense popularity of the University Library is testified by its steady growth in the number of users. At present on an average one thousand users use the Central Library facilities. In order to promote awareness about the Library among various stakeholders, it organises exhibitions on various subjects on a regular basis.
Sports Facilities
The Board arranges for Inter Collegiate Tournaments every year both for men and women students of the affiliated colleges Football, Cricket, Hockey, Basket Ball, Volley Ball, Badminton, Table Tennis, Athletics, Swimming, Weight Lifting & Best Physique, Boxing, etc. Championships for omen students in various games like Athletics, Swimming, BasketBall, VolleyBall, Badminton, Table Tennis, Kabadi, Cricket, Kho - Kho, etc. are also held.
The University has its own play ground and a tent at the Calcutta Maidan and a separate Rowing Club with sufficient equipment's in a spacious building by the side of the DhakuriaLake in the southern part of the city.
Hostels
The University has a number of hostels having provision for accommodation for about 1200 boys and 385 girls. Besides this there are 8 non - collegiate hostels for male students and 3 for girl students which together accommodate about 1100 candidates.
Additional Details
The jurisdiction of the University is now limited to the State of West Bengal excluding the areas which are included within the local limits of jurisdiction of any other university established by the law within West Bengal. It has now 58 Post Graduate teaching departments and 209 affiliated colleges, serving about 300,000 students. The University conducts about 658 examinations in a year.
