University Profile
The University of Pune (formerly known as University of Poona) was established under the Poona University Act, passed by the Bombay Legislature on 10th February, 1948. In the same year, Dr. M. R. Jayakar assumed office as the first vice chancellor of the University. During the year 1949, there were only 18 colleges affiliated to the University, with an enrollment of over 8000 students. Thereafter, the number of colleges increased, and in 1994-95, the University had 41 post-graduate departments, 209 affiliated colleges and 118 recognized research institutions, with an enrollment of 1,70,000 students for both the under-graduate and post-graduate courses in different faculties.

Library
The library of University is established in January 1950, named in honor of the First Vice-Chancellor Dr. M.R. Jayakar.
Special Features
- Bibliographies on special authors prescribed for M.A. in English, Hindi and Marathi are prepared for use of Readers, and Topical bibliographies are supplied on demand.
- Establishment of Internet Center for students of the University.
- Guidance in respect of technical and organizational matters relating to libraries is extended, when asked for.
- Implementation of RFID technology in the library along with smart cards to faculty and students.
- Inter Library Loan System extended to affiliates colleges and Recognized institutions.
- Jayakar library is a part of Universal Digital Library program since 2002.
- Lists of prominent books added to the library are circulated to concerned Departments of the University.
- Manuscripts Section.
- Orientation Course in Library use for new students enrolled in various Departments of the University.
- Participation in UGC- INFLIBNET program. Under this program access to more than 2000 journals is provided.
- Special Reading facilities (cubical) for Ph.D. Students.
- Union Catalogue of back volumes of periodicals available in the libraries of constituent colleges and recognized institutions in Pune in card form.

- Monday to Friday : 10.30 A.M. to 5.00 P.M.
- Saturdays : 10.30 A.M. to 1.30 P.M.
Hostel Facility
University of Pune provides hostel facility to both girls and boys. The hostel facility is granted to the students of the University strictly on the basis of merit. The number of seats for each department depends on the department size.
