University Profile
GauhatiUniversity was established by an act of the State Legislature, namely, the Gauhati University Act 1947 (Assam Act, XVI of 1947), of the Government of Assam in the year 1948. The University is in its 58th year existence, and is the oldest, largest, and the most premier seat of higher education in the entire North Eastern Region of India. The University which started functioning from the city centre was shifted to the present campus in 1955-56. The University has been awarded a 4-star (****) status by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) of UGC.
 
GauhatiUniversity was incorporated by an Act of 1947. It started functioning on 26 January, 1948 as an affiliating, teaching and residential university in a few temporary buildings in Guwahati, with K.K.Handiqui as the first Vice-Chancellor. Phanidhar Dutta, Sailandhar Rajkhowa and Sarat Kumar Dutta were selected as the Registrar, Treasurer and Secretary of University Classes respectively. The emblem of the University, selected from among many submitted, was designed by T.Mukherjee, a textile designer of Ahmedabad. Two Sanskrit words inscribed on it – Vidyaya Sadhayeta (meaning achievement through learning) –indicate the motto of the University.
 
GauhatiUniversity receives Annual Financial Grants from the Government of Assam and Development Grants from the University Grants Commission apart from different funding agencies like CSIR, DST DBT, NEC, ICAR, ICHR, MAKAIAS, among others, who sponsor various research projects.
 
Administration
The first Court meeting of the University was held on 26-1-48 at the old Sudmerson Hall of Cotton College, Guwahati. Accordingly the date '26 January' is observed as the Foundation Day of Gauhati University. Thanks to the relentless and untiring efforts of a band of dedicated workers like Gopinath Bordoloi (The first Chief Minister of Assam. He was awarded 'Bharat Ratna' posthumously), Madhab Bezbarua, Bhubaneswar Barua, Sarat Chandra Goswami, Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed (former President of India), and many others, and the help and co-operation of the people of Assam, the University could be established in 1948.

Library
The K. K. Handiqui Library was established to cater to the needs of the students, teachers and research scholars of the University. It not only helps in supporting the classroom instructional programmes of the University, but also unfolds the horizon of knowledge in regard to the different research programmes carried out by the University.
 
The Gauhati University Library started its functioning in 1948 at Chandmari (now known as old University Colony) and then shifted to Room No.1 of the Arts building and accommodated in the present building in 1962. In 1982 the Gauhati University Library was renamed as K. K. Handiqui Library after the death of its first Vice Chancellor Professor K. K. Handiqui an Orientalist of world fame.

Accommodation
GauhatiUniversity has a Guest House located at the East end of the University Campus (at a few hundred meters from the Jalukbari Rotary Point).
 
The Guest House is equipped with the following accommodation facilities:
 
  • One AC room.
  • Three single seated room (non AC).
  • Fourteen double-bedded rooms (non AC). 
All rooms have attached bathrooms.
 
Besides, the Guest House is equipped with:
 
  • Catering facilities with Dinning Hall.
  • Conference Hall. 
Standard-quality hygienic food is available at the following nominal rates:
 
  • Base Meal: Rs. 35.00 (Pure Veg.)
  • Additional:
    • Egg: Rs. 10.00.
    • Fish: Rs. 20.00
    • Chicken: Rs. 25.00

Lodging is available at the following nominal rates:
 
  • Rs. 100.00 (rupees one hundred only) per bed (outsiders).
  • Rs. 50.00 (rupees fifty only) per bed (University Guests/Invitees).
