University Profile
PanjabUniversity is one of the oldest universities in India. The PanjabUniversity was established at Lahore in 1882 as the fourth teaching and affiliating University in South Asia under the British Raj. PanjabUniversity has a long tradition of pursuing excellence in teaching and research in science and technology, humanities, social sciences, performing arts and sports. The University support excellence and innovation in academic programmes. Promotes excellence in research, scholarship and teaching and is committed to attracting and supporting the best students and recruiting faculty who excel at teaching and research. After the partition in 1947, the University was constrained to function for almost a decade without having a campus of its own. The administrative office was located at Solan and the teaching departments functioned from Hoshiarpur, Jalandhar, Delhi and Amritsar. It was in 1956 that the University was relocated at Chandigarh.
The main campus at Chandigarh is spread over 550 acres in sectors 14 and 25, the sector 14 having the main academic and administrative buildings, besides a health centre, a sports complex, hostels and residential area. The PanjabUniversity has four museums and the department of Indian theatre has its own theatre lab, which is unique in the country. The university has a Botanical Garden and a Garden of Medicinal Plants on the campus.
The University has been recently selected by the UGC as the "University with Potential for Excellence in Bio-Medical Sciences.? Initial Grant of Rs. 5 crore has been released by the UGC under the scheme. The University continues to attract celebrated scholars from abroad to visit and interact with the faculty and students. Over the years the reputation of PanjabUniversity has grown into one of innovative teaching research and community outreach.

The department of sports is located in the Panjab University Jawahar Lal Nehru Complex. This complex has a magnificent air-conditioned gymnasium hall for in-door games with international standard facilities and equipment for badminton, table-tennis, weight lifting, judo and wrestling. A separate fitness centre for women and a well equipped physiotherapy laboratory has also been established in the gymnasium hall. A swimming pool of international dimensions is also available in the university campus which is used for all the swimming competitions held in this city. The main objective of the sports department is to foster sportsman spirit, discipline, co-operation, honesty, integrity and fitness among the players.
The department has the following spacious and lush green playgrounds within the university campus:-
1. 400 meters grassy athletic track (8 lanes)
2. Two basketball cemented courts (one with flood light)
3. Four volleyball courts (one cinder court)

Latest and modern equipment for all the games is available for the use of the university players. PanjabUniversity has won Maulana Abul Kalam Azad Trophy 12 times, runners-up position two times and 3rd position five times in the all IndiaInter-University competitions.
Library
The Panjab University Library, named officially as "A. C. Joshi Library", after the name of an illustrious Vice-Chancellor of this University, was established in the U.S. Club, Shimla in the year 1947 after the Partition of the country. The Central A.C. Joshi Library of PanjabUniversity has a holding of over 6 lac books and 1.5 lac periodicals some of which are rare collections from the 19th century. The University Library has been recognised as one of the six national Centres for data-information-distribution in the UGC’s INFLIBNET programme. The Library is now fully computerized with an integrated system connected to the Campus Network providing Internet and e-mail facility to the University community. The reference collection of the Library is continuously updated, and augmented with the acquisition of CD-ROM databases and access to on-line databases on Internet.
