University Profile
Jadavpur University is a StateUniversity under the State of West Bengal. Its parent institution was set up by the National Council of Education, Bengal in 1906. After India's Independence, the institution was converted to a University under the first Jadavpur University Act in 1955, and recognised by the University Grants Commission the same year. JadavpurUniversity has been declared as the Centre of Excellence in Mobile Computing and Communication by the University Grants Commission. The university has also been accredited with the status of five stars by the National Assessment and Accreditation Committee.

Library
The University Library is housed in a three-storied building on the campus. Its shelf space and working space total 36,000 sq.ft., and is being extended by new construction. Three reading rooms, carrels, and an alcove for bound volumes of journals provide sitting accommodation for 500 readers. The stacking capacity is for 3,60,000 volumes. There is a separate library on the Second Campus.
At present, the Central Library has over 4,18,000 volumes of books on record (including those loaned to Departmental Libraries), 80,000 bound volumes of journals, 5,000 theses and dissertations, and 37,000 items of non-book materials such as reports, pamphlets, maps and micro-forms. In addition, the Second Campus Library has over 14,000 volumes. About 800 current journals are received regularly.
Hours of opening: The hours of opening of the Library shall ordinarily be as follows:
1. Reading Rooms
· 10-20 A.M. to 8 P.M. daily, excepting Saturdays and University holidays.
2. Circulation Section
· 10:35 A.M. to 5:15 P.M. daily except Saturdays and University holidays.
3. Administration & Technical Sections
· 10:20 A.M. to 5:15 P.M. daily, excepting Saturdays and University holidays.
· 10:20 A.M. to 4:30 P.M. on Saturdays.
